PROVENCE TO PARIS
In 2018, my wife Marianne and I embarked on a Rhine River cruise, something we had long dreamed about but never really expected to happen.
When it came time for our cruise, severe drought in Germany meant that much of the distance would be covered not floating past historic castles but on a highway, by bus, as we detoured around the Rhine all the way from Strasbourg to the Netherlands.
The river tour company, AmaWaterways, gave us a generous credit toward a future tour, and we booked one… for 2020. A global pandemic put a stop to that, and did so again in 2021. In 2022, we couldn’t make a European trip work, but AmaWaterways was kind enough to extend our credit through 2023. Finally, in September 2023, days before our anniversary, we were on our way to Provence to fulfill our dreams of an indulgent river cruise — this time on France’s Rhône River, with days before and after the cruise to explore Provence, Versailles, and Paris.
Arrival in Provence
We land in Marseille and drive a possessed rental car to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a beautiful old town with connections to Clovis I, Nostradamus, and Vincent Van Gogh.
Les Baux-de-Provence
A day of driving through Provence is highlighted by a stop in the mountainous village of Les Baux-de-Provence, featuring charming passageways full of shops and the ruins of a mighty 10th-century castle.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape & Avignon
We have a bucket list experience visiting two wineries in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, then make the short drive to Avignon for shopping and history, plus a memorable anniversary dinner.
L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue & Gordes
We visit three Provençal towns in one day: shopping in the center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, strolling along the canals and walkways of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and taking in sunset views over dinner in Gordes.
Embarkation in Arles
It’s time to board the AmaCello for our six-day cruise up the Rhône River. But first, we spend a few hours seeing the sights and eating crispy galettes in Arles.
Arles & Avignon Deux
We return to both Arles and Avignon, this time following tours that take us to breathtaking Roman monuments, scenes painted by Van Gogh, and a variety of local delicacies.
Viviers
We enjoy a peaceful day in Viviers, a quiet village of gorgeous stone passageways topped by the oldest cathedral in France.
Vienne & Lyon
Our river-cruise itinerary takes us through two cities packed with history in one day, visiting Roman and medieval wonders in Vienne and exploring the streets of the old city in Lyon.
Mâcon
We take a walking tour around beautiful Mâcon in southern Burgundy, exploring a multitude of churches and other sights, and stopping by the oldest (and lewdest) building in the city.
Tournus
The AmaCello sails on to Tournus, a town granted 1,150 years ago to monks who founded its top tourist destination, the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Philibert.
Chalon-sur-Saône
The final stop of our river cruise is Chalon-sur-Saône. We tour the charming village, then take a bus through the Châlonnaise wine country to taste the local Burgundy.
From Port to Paris
With our river cruise complete, we take a TGV to Paris for the final leg of the journey. We get settled in the Latin Quarter, then head out for an indulgent dinner at one of the finest restaurants in Paris.
Versailles
We visit the Palace of Versailles, the creation of “Sun King” Louis XIV and an enduring symbol of royal opulence. We tour the magnificent château and massive gardens before returning to Paris for a fondue feast.
A Wander in Paris
We spend the final day of our journey through France wandering around Paris, powered by whim.
